My Busy Summer 2010 Edition

Written By David Clowney | June 1, 2010

The David Clowney Foundation Celebrity Weekend was a great success.

First we had a big meet-and-greet for all the celebs who came out to Delray just to get to know each other. Then we had a silent auction to raise some money and that night I took all the fellas out to enjoy a night in Miami just as a thank you for everybody who came out.

The next morning was the David Clowney Youth Football Camp, and almost 300 kids showed up. We ran them through football drills, speed and agility drills, and they were taught by NFL players. It worked out really well.

That evening we had the David Clowney Celebrity Basketball Game. Everybody was there, Gary Owens the comedian, Benji Brown, my teammates, James Ideghibo and Vernon Gholston. James was actually pretty good at basketball. Vernon was a little stiff. Also Davone Bess from the Dolphins, Atari Bigby from the Packers, Brandon Flowers from the Chiefs, Uncle Luke, everybody was there.

The next day was the Celebrity Bowling Tournament and I won. I rolled a tough 190, but I didn’t have my own ball, I had to use a house ball. Usually I can get up over 200.

We really had a nice crowd come out and support the Foundation. I was nervous, I didn’t think it would be as big as it was, but it turned out to be a great success. So many people turned out to support a great cause. We ended up raising close to $10,000 and that will really help the kids.

Sunday night after the fireworks I’m headed to Orlando to train with Santonio Holmes, Chris Johnson and some others at Tom Shaw’s spot for a week. My birthday is July 8, I was thinking about throwing a pool party for family and friends.

On July 11 I’m going to take off with Mark Sanchez and all of the Jets skill position players and head out to Cali for a week. We’re going to do a big training session to get ready for training camp. Basically it’s to get us all on the same page for when we get to training camp, make sure we have the signals down pat, so when Mark looks at us we already know what’s going on. We’ll do that until July 16, when I will fly back to Jersey.

On July 19 me and Santonio Holmes are going to fly to Ghana and be there for a week.

We get home on July 26 and have just a couple of days to prepare for training camp, which starts August 1 in Cortland, N.Y.

It’s a busy summer, as usual, but I’ll be in the best shape of my life once training camp starts.

Second Day of OTAs

Written By David Clowney | May 18, 2010

As everyone knows, I went to Haiti in March with two of my teammates, James Ihedigbo and Vernon Gholston. We went to Haiti on a mission relief trip to help the children and families after the earthquake.

The four-day trip consisted of visiting different communities, putting together camping tents for the families that didn’t have homes and were sleeping under sheets being held up by wooden sticks. We also passed out water, food, clothes, shoes, etc…

We visited orphanages, and when we got to the first orphanage the children sung a couple gospel songs for us. It was a sad time of the trip for me, seeing and watching the kids walk around on rocks and stones. Mattresses as thin as spiral notebook pads. After they welcomed us with song we passed out baby food, baby formula, diapers, tampons, water, nutritional cereal bars, and a lot more.

During our mission we were helping out a different community by passing out food and such, and we found out the President of Haiti had REQUESTED to meet us. So we went off our schedule to meet the President of Haiti. It was an honor of course being that I have been in the United States all 25 years of my life and not once have I met any of my own presidents.

For the most part, the trip was a great success. We got a lot done and the people of Haiti had a big ceremony for me, Vernon, James and his mother to thank us for everything that we got done while we were there.

Upcoming events:

David Clowney Foundation weekend, June 25-27, South Florida.

My trip to Ghana, July 10-16.

My Foundation and Abe Elam’s Foundation will host a car show, July 17, South Florida.

I’ll have another blog in a few days about my Foundation events and my trip to Ghana so check back in soon.

Headed to Haiti

Written By David Clowney | March 15, 2010

I flew back to New Jersey last Thursday from Florida. I was there working out every day after the Super Bowl. I spent a lot of time with my family, especially my little brother. He's a great athlete and right now he is playing baseball. So I make sure I'm at every game when I'm at home.

Today, me, Vernon Gholston, and James Ihedigbo are going to Haiti to help with the mission relief. My foundation, the David Clowney Foundation, has had people from all over the country send and donate clothes for me to take to Haiti and give to the people who need them.

I am super excited about this trip and can't wait to get out there to help out. Especially being that I have so many friends that are in South Florida who are from Haiti. We will be out there visiting orphanages, passing out clothes, toys and water. Teaching the youth how to play American football and just trying to make a little bit of a difference.

I'm definitely going to Tweet some pics while I'm out there, so make sure you guys check them out at www.twitter.com/davidclowney.

Bout to take off!

A Long Journey

Written By David Clowney | January 15, 2010

We leave for San Diego today, but it’s already been a long journey to get to this point. Nobody thought we could get this far, but we got it done and here we are, two wins from the Super Bowl.

Personally I hope the Ravens beat Indy so we can play the AFC Championship Game in New York if we get that far. That would be great for Jets fans and that would be a lot of fun.

I’m excited but I know we have to win this game first. Rex says we can and I believe him. The Chargers are a real good team, but I think we can come out with a win. I’m not putting anything past us.

The Chargers have a great linebacking corps with Phillips and Merriman, they’re a great team, but there’s nothing that says we can’t dominate them offensively. We’ve got some of the best athletes in the world on our team. With our running game going strong, our offensive line and Mark making good decisions, at the end of the day I think we’re going to make the plays and come out with a win.

A lot of people have asked if a rookie quarterback can win in the playoffs. A rookie quarterback already has won in the playoffs. We’ve won one playoff game and we’re just taking them one game at a time.

For me, I would definitely sacrifice all of my catches to make sure we get that win. It’s all about being unselfish this time of year.

I’m still young, it’s my third year in the league and I’m excited to be on a team that has a chance to get to the Super Bowl. It would be the coolest thing ever to get there, and I know the rookies are just full of joy, guys like Mark and Jamaal Westerman.

The real big deal is that if we get to the Super Bowl I’m playing at home in Miami, and I would love for that to happen. I don’t even have the words to explain what that would be like for me.

But I know we still have two big games to win, and the road goes through San Diego right now so that’s what we’re concentrating on.

One more thing, sorry I haven’t been on this site too much lately, I’ve been all tied up focusing on football so thanks for hanging in there.

Thanksgiving and Twitter

Written By David Clowney | November 24, 2009

Thursday I’ve got about 25 people coming over and I’m doing all the cooking. It’ll be a feast with ham, turkey, collard greens, mac and cheese, cranberry sauce, peach cobbler and sweet potato pie.

I’ve got people coming in from Florida, Connecticut and New York. I told a couple of teammates they should swing by, too. I know Bart Scott is having a catered Thanksgiving dinner at his place. When everybody gets too crazy at my house I’ll probably sneak away to Bart’s house and kick it over there.

Everybody has been upset the last couple weeks about how things have been going. We’re losing games we should be winning, without a doubt. That’s the way I feel personally and the way the team feels. A lot of people are frustrated.

With a rookie quarterback there are always going to be mistakes made. The biggest thing is to learn from those mistakes, but in the NFL you can’t learn over time, you have to learn that week. Right away. Mark is a great guy and I believe he’s already a great quarterback. We all just have to get rid of the mental mistakes and we’ll get back to winning games again.

I want to talk about that Twitter thing. I don’t know exactly what happened, someone hacked into my account and went stupid crazy on my Twitter page. I just want to let the fans know that wasn’t me. I definitely want to apologize to anyone who was offended, but it wasn’t me. A guy with the team got in touch with someone from Twitter and took my page down so they could delete all those messages and change my password. So I have cancelled my Twitter account for now.

Dang, my dogs just ran away and I don’t know where they are. I just put them in a cage but they ripped a hole right through it. I have to go get them, gotta run!

A Much Better Place

Written By David Clowney | October 29, 2009

We are in a much better place this week. Last week at this time we had lost three in a row and I had no catches. To come back and have another start and have the game that I did, it feels great to contribute and get my first touchdown catch.

I almost came to tears on the sideline. I’ve been waiting on that thing for three years. All the times I’ve shined in the preseason, I finally got an opportunity in the regular season and I made it happen.

We didn’t throw the ball a lot against Oakland, because if it ain’t broke don’t fix it. We had two running backs running the heck out of the ball, so we just had to keep running it. That’s great because it’s going to open up plays for myself, Bray, Jerricho, Wallace and Brad.

Anytime a team wants to put eight in the box and play man up on us, that’s going to be a mistake for any team.

On my touchdown it was just a regular go route, from the 35-yard line or so. Coach switched me to the other side of the ball, from flanker to split end, and Mark just tossed one up to me. It’s funny because I actually talked to Mark a couple plays before that and told him whatever you do, throw it early and let me run under it. He threw it a little behind me, but it was good enough to allow me to make a play on it. You have to have that confidence and the quarterback has to have that confidence that the receivers can make plays.

We have the Dolphins up here this week. When we played them down there I personally don’t think we should have lost. We shot ourselves in the foot. We weren’t outplayed or outcoached.

If we play the way the Jets are supposed to play, there’s not a team in the NFL that can beat us.

Then we’ll have a bye week, and I’m definitely looking forward to getting down to Florida to spend some time with friends and family. But right now I’m totally focused on the Miami game.

Bowling Jets

Written By David Clowney | October 21, 2009

I had my bowling event on Monday to raise money for the David Clowney Foundation at Jersey Lanes in Linden. It was called Bowling with the New York Jets and it was fabulous, great, outstanding. A lot of people came out, a councilman, the chief of police, the fire chief, and a whole lot of Jets players.

Mark Sanchez, D’Brickashaw Ferguson, Dustin Keller, Kevin O’Connell, James Ihedigbo, Drew Coleman, Marques Douglas, Bart Scott, Shonn Greene, Vernon Gholston, Erik Ainge, Donald Strickland, Wallace Wright, Kenwin Cummings and Keith Fitzhugh all were there and it was a great time. We had a silent auction for autographed jerseys, pictures, footballs and helmets. The food was great and the event was sponsored by Chevy. We raised a lot of money.

As for the bowling, Shonn Greene balled out with a 169. Vernon had a 146, Bart Scott and Marques Douglas each had a 143 and Keith had a 133. Mark Sanchez’s first ball went straight into the gutter, and I was really messing with him after that. So when it was my turn he snuck up behind me and tossed one into the gutter.

I ended up bowling around a 148. It seemed like every frame I left 1 pin standing instead of getting a strike, and then I missed that one pin.

The whole event was really outstanding, and I was almost in tears because of the support I received from my teammates, all showing up like they did. The event would not have been an event without the players there. But it was a total success and it meant a lot to me to have that support from the players as friends.

This will be an annual event. As long as I’m playing football in New York, I’ll keep doing it.

As for football, we’re 3-3 right now but we should be at least 5-1. All three losses I really believe we beat ourselves. We went out there and didn’t play the type of football we need to be playing. If we play Jets football like we know how to, we won’t have any problems or issues.

There’s not a team that can beat us if we play Jets football.

This team just has to come together. I’ve seen the offense put up points and I’ve seen the defense shut down just about anybody. At the end of the day, if we can bring it all together, all three phases, we’ll be unstoppable. And the best thing is, we haven’t even played our best football yet.

We turned the ball over six times in Buffalo and we were still in the game, that shows a lot about us.

Now we’re going out to Oakland and a lot of guys have bitter tastes in their mouths from how we lost to them last year. A lot of guys are sick of this losing thing, we were 3-0 at one point and the guys are ready to get back to winning.

I think we’re going to go out to Oakland and get this win and start another winning streak all over again.

New Teammate, a Friend Gone

Written By David Clowney | October 7, 2009

There’s a new No. 17 with the Jets, Braylon Edwards. It’s kind of interesting to have him with the Jets now, it’s more ammunition for our team.

To have a Pro Bowl receiver like him, it’s just going to help us get better and better. With him and Jerricho, plus me and Brad still in the mix, it’s going to help us get to where we want to be, that’s the Super Bowl.

Chansi is a real good friend of mine, we got drafted the same year. We’ve been real close since I got traded to the Jets from Green Bay. He had a birthday party the other day, and now I’m glad I got to see him and hang out with him before he left. I’m going to give him a call tonight but I hear he’s excited about the trade. At the end of the day we’re football players, we just want to play football, and if he gets a chance to do that in Cleveland I think he’ll be happy.

I don’t think this will take away any playing time from me. I think my role will increase as far as playing time. Every day I just go in and work hard so I’m ready, so during the game if someone needs a break, when I step in the team won’t miss a beat. I think this weekend is going to be real exciting for me.

Braylon is at the facility working with our receivers coach right now. He’s learning the plays. Of course every time there’s a trade it takes some time to get used to the playbook and the terminology. That’s why we have 2-a-days in training camp. At the same time, I think if he goes at the playbook real hard the next couple of days, he’ll be ready for the Dolphins.

We’re coming off a loss for the first time this season. I think we had a good game against the Saints, the whole team played well, but at the same time we have a lot of things to work on. We had a lot of mental errors and minor things.

We’re first in our division and we haven’t played our best football yet, which is a great thing for the Jets. The key now is to bounce back and keep getting a whole lot better as the season goes on.

The whole Twitter thing is old news now, but just to clarify it was just a misunderstanding between me and the head man. I wrote a message on Twitter after a friend Tweeted me and said he didn’t see me in the game. I replied and said I played one play in the first half and four in the second and that I was a little disappointed about my playing time, but still satisfied and happy about my team’s victory.

I wrote that the team always comes first.

Someone decided to bring Coach Ryan just the first half of the message, about me being disappointed with my playing time. So it looked to Coach like I was being an individual and not a team player more concerned about my own reps than the team’s win.

That was never really the case. People on Twitter especially know that I back my teammates 100 percent, regardless of whether they are right or wrong. I snapped at one guy on Twitter because he was getting on my teammates after a preseason game.

When it was all done and over with, me and Coach Ryan sat down and had a talk about the situation. He said I responded very well to the benching, coming back to practice and going hard, and he thought very highly of me after that. So there’s no bad feelings, I have a lot of love for Rex, I’m glad he’s our coach. He said he’s one of my biggest fans and told me to be ready when my number was called. That’s really all I can do, be ready when my number is called.

I’m not too worried about getting my catches, eventually they will come. It all came down to just wanting to be there in the game. I was excited about my preseason and I guess I expected to be in there a little more.

I’ve been playing football all my life, there’s nothing I love more. When we won our first two games I felt like I wasn’t really a part of it because I wasn’t playing as much. You practice all week and help prepare, then when you win you want to feel like a part of it. You want to be able to celebrate a victory with the team, regardless if you made a single block, a single catch, ran a decoy route to open a window for someone else.

Anything to help the team win would mean a lot to me as far as contributing.

We’re on Monday Night Football this week and it’s going to be exciting for me to go back down to South Florida where I grew up. I grew up 35 minutes from the stadium, so it should be fun to play in front of my family and friends, the people I grew up with. Miami has always been good to me, every time I’ve played there in high school or college I’ve always had a good game. I’ve always sold out, hopefully that will happen this year too.

I also want to mention that it’s not too late to sign up for my charity bowling event on Oct. 19 at Jersey Lanes in Linden. A bunch of my teammates are going to be there to help raise money for the David Clowney Foundation including D’Brickashaw Ferguson, Bart Scott, Dustin Keller, Chansi Stuckey, Wallace Wright, Drew Coleman, Ahmad Carroll, Kris Jenkins, Marques Douglas, and many more. Maybe Nick Mangold, Thomas Jones and Howard Green, too. Come out and meet the Jets and support the kids!

Flying Under the Radar

Written By David Clowney | September 11, 2009

I’ve been ready for this, I’ve been waiting on this game a long time, even more because of my shoulder injury last year. I’m ready to take this game with full force, especially because I didn’t get the chance last year.

I’ve made my mark in the preseason, now it’s time to put my stamp down during the regular season. Everything we did in the preseason was to get us ready for this. The team is definitely ready, guys at every position are working every day to get better, putting in extra work to make sure we do even the smallest things correct.

Sunday is when it will all pay off.

Houston hasn’t had Dunta Robinson all through the preseason so I haven’t really had an opportunity to study him. The rest of the guys there look decent but nothing that wows you. They’re probably saying the same thing about our receiver corps, that we’re all flying under the radar. That’s where we want to be, flying under the radar, so in the first game we can pop open some eyes and have people talking about us for real.

I’ll be playing against a couple my boys from Virginia Tech, offensive tackle Duane Brown, he was my roommate and a 1st-round draft pick, and Xavier Adibi, a 3rd-round pick. We played together for four years and Xavier never did get the opportunity to hit me. I guess he’ll get it now. At least he can try.

I’ve always had a lot of confidence. People have always said that I’m cocky, but I’ve never been a cocky person. I’m just confident in what I can do, and in this league if you’re not, you’re probably going to get beat out of your job. I don’t ever want to second-guess myself with a ball coming my way or when I have someone to block, no matter how big they are. You always have to have confidence in your ability as an athlete.

I’ll tell you what, Mark Sanchez is looking real good right now. I’m proud of the way he’s stepped up under pressure. He’s not afraid to make mistakes, and when he has he’s been able to come back from them in the same game. Rookies have to learn from mistakes.

Hopefully he’ll come out and fling the ball around and make us all look good.

Get Through Game 2

Written By David Clowney | August 20, 2009

Everybody is looking good in practice and in our first game. It was great catching Mark Sanchez’ first pass, I’m definitely glad I came down with that ball and was able to show that I can make things happen. Erik Ainge also showed me something with that TD pass, he has a lot stronger arm than people think.

Despite what you see in the media, both of our quarterbacks are looking real good. The media is trying to hype it up, saying Sanchez had a good day and Clemens had a bad day, then the next day they switch it around. I’m telling you they both look real good right now. The whole team looks good, the offense and defense are making plays back and forth which is always a good thing because everybody comes to compete every day out there.

The key for me is to get through this next preseason game healthy. In Green Bay I had a big first game, then got hurt in the second. Last year I had two TDs in our first game against Cleveland and almost 100 yards in the second but I hurt my shoulder on the last catch.

I just have to make it through this next game, because I know for a fact now that I can make plays and carry that into the regular season. Maybe I should just skip the third quarter Monday night at Baltimore, that’s when I always seem to get hurt. lol

Fans on Twitter have asked if I’m concerned the Jets might trade for Brandon Marshall. Truth is I’m not concerned at all, I’m just focused on doing what I have to do, which is staying on the field and making as many plays as I can.

It’s great having the speed that I have. It’s one of the best things in the world that God has blessed me with. It got me a lot of track scholarship offers out of high school. I know I can go out there and run past people and be a deep threat. I always tell the quarterbacks that I like passes overthrown instead of under, if it’s launched I have the opportunity to chase it down instead of coming back and having to jump for it. I like to use that speed to my advantage instead of helping the cornerback get back into the play.

I’ll race anybody. Tell DeAngelo Hall he don’t want to see that race right now. Anytime you wanna run it DHall, I’m ready.

One more thing I want to tell my fans, get on Twitter and follow me @davidclowney because I’m going to have a ticket giveaway for our final preseason game against Philadelphia on Thursday night Sept. 3.

Chemistry Class

Written By David Clowney | July 28, 2009

Since I’ve been back in New Jersey I’ve been meeting up with Kellen Clemens every day at the Jets facility. We pretty much run the whole route tree, from the hitch to the go-out and everything in between.

Working together helps me get used to his ball, and at the same time he can get used to my speed as far as how to throw any specific route. All receivers are different, different height, different speed, so the QB has to throw a different ball for each receiver. So I’m really grinding it out, running, catching balls every day, workin’ out.

Working out like this definitely helps as far as me and him getting on the same page. Kellen and I have had chemistry since last year going into the preseason because I was in there with him early then, too. You saw it in the preseason against the Redskins when I had like 5 catches.

I’m definitely used to Kellen, now it’s about making it happen when the game comes around if he’s the guy.

The rookies have already reported and get three days at training camp by themselves. The rest of us report to Cortland on Thursday.

I’m looking forward to just ballin’ every day, actin’ the fool, scoring touchdowns and trying to do everything I can to make our D look terrible in practice … expose our defense in practice. Me and Bart Scott talk plenty of trash, we were even going at it a little bit during OTAs and mini-camp. Just random stuff, when I’m coming back from a play I’ll give Bart or Bryan Thomas a shoulder, just messin’ with those guys, keeping them on their toes.

I’m excited for training camp because that means the season is almost here. I felt like I had a lot to prove last year but because of my injury I was only able to prove it during preseason and one game. I felt like what I did in that one game, I could have been doing all season.

Now it’s time to make it happen during the regular season for real. I spent the off-season working out with some great players, my old friend Brandon Flowers of the Chiefs, we grew up together and played together in high school and college. I also worked it hard with Keith Bulluck, Jevon Kearse, Samari Rolle, Jamal Lewis and Takeo Spikes.

This is the last year of my contract but I don’t feel any pressure about that. My only thoughts are to do everything I can to help this team get to the Super Bowl. Do everything in my control, help this team get to the Super Bowl and great things will happen after that.

Workin’ and Playin’

Written By David Clowney | July 10, 2009

I’m working hard for real right now, getting ready for two-a-days. The last couple of days I’ve done beach workouts with Jamal Lewis, Takeo Spikes and a couple other guys with a trainer down here in Miami.

It’s rough when you do everything in the sand. We do 40-yard sprints, backpedals, 100-yard sprints, reaction drills. Most days I’m working out twice, running in the morning and lifting in the afternoon, then switching it up. As a receiver it’s important to lift a lot with your legs to keep them strong, keep your speed and stamina up late in the game. I also bench to build upper-body strength so when a DB presses you at the line you can get him off.

But this past Wednesday was my birthday so I’ve also been having some fun. I flew down here to catch up with my family. Nobody gave me any presents though. LOL

I went to Barcelona for a few days, took a tour of the city, saw the Olympic Stadium, that was nice.

Tomorrow we’re having a celebrity pool party called Athletes and Angels in Miami at a nice hotel. Some of the guys who will be there are Aaron Maybin, me, Jamal Lewis, Tarvaris Jackson and Brandon Flowers. Last year Shawn Marion and Terrell Owens were there. Once all the guys from Miami hear about it, they’ll all be there.

Also, I’m going to Orlando to hit Universal Studios and Wet and Wild with my little brother, Vernon Gholston and some other friends of mine .

I really don’t get the chance to relax a whole lot, but that’s okay. Life is too short for relaxing, you have to enjoy every minute of every day.

My Crazy Schedule

We just finished our 3-day mini camp and I had one real bad day in the middle. But I made up for it today by finishing strong. A lot of guys can’t bounce back right away after a bad practice but I was able to do that.

I haven’t always been getting good sleep so sometimes I’m not as focused as I would like to be. See I’m in school getting my master’s in criminal justice from the College of St. Elizabeth. It’s tough because I’ve never been one to make excuses and not turn my work in.

I figure I should get my work done and I don’t mind being tired right now in the off-season. I still work hard in the weight room and study my plays. But training camp is where you really need to be focused. We’ll be going 7 in the morning to 7 at night so I won’t be taking any classes. I want to be at my full maximum potential through training camp, no issues, no problems, no being exhausted. I want to be at 100 percent every day.

But this has been one crazy offseason.

April 24—Drew Coleman’s football camp in Texas
May 1—My sister’s graduation from FSU in Tallahassee
May 13—Football camp in California, where my godbrother’s son was baptized
May 22—Had the weekend to myself so I went to Florida
May 29-20—To Connecticut for Coach Mangini’s football camp
June 6—My camp in Delray Beach
June 13—Fundraising event for my foundation in D.C.
June 20—Back to Florida for Abe Elam’s family fun day for charity
June 24-28—I’m the best man at a wedding in Aruba
July 9-11—Back to Florida again for another football camp
July 30—Report for Jets training camp

All this, plus I’m moving into a new house and I’m staying on track to get my graduate degree in December 2010.

My football camp for the David Clowney Foundation was a lot of work but a big success. There were 300 kids, 15 NFL guys, all the sponsors showed up. Check out the photos at www.jasonmyersphoto.com. Click on David Clowney’s football camp and the password is football.

As you can tell, I’m a little busy. But the Jets are done now until training camp. I’m going to try to chill a little bit and get my body right for two a days so I can come in the best shape possible.

Jets Look Good in OTAs

Written By David Clowney | May 19, 2009

I just got back from Cali this past weekend and started right into OTAs.

The rookies started yesterday and they all looked real good, from Mark Sanchez to Shonn Greene, even the free agent guys. There’s a lot of competition going on right now especially for the young guys.

Really, everything is looking great right now, the offense and the defense. Neither is dominating, which is good. We’re really taking turns dominating. The offense is passing and scoring touchdowns and the defense is getting picks and sacks. Both sides are making plays back-and-forth. That’s always a good thing instead of one side just dominating.

I’ve been working with the first team, but as the third receiver. I’m still not starting yet. Jericho is number 1 on the depth chart, then Chansi Stuckey then me. Sometimes I’m in on the two-receiver sets, too, depending on the play.

There’s still a lot of time to impress the coaches before they decide who the starters are going to be.

I want to talk about my football camp on June 6 in Delray Beach. We’re going to have over 500 kids and lots of NFL guys. Abram Elam, Drew Coleman, D’Brickashaw Ferguson, Mark Sanchez, LaMarr Woodley, Prescott Burgess, Willis McGahee, Antonio Freeman, Al Harris, Vernon Gholston, Vontae and Vernon Davis.

We’re going to have individual drills, cone drills, agility workouts, parachute workouts, 40 times and a 7-on-7 tournaments. I’m trying to lock down 7 of the NFL guys to take on the winners of the 7-on-7 tournament.

We have Subway and Pantera as sponsors already but we could still use more sponsors and donations. It’s a good cause. Money for the David Clowney Foundation goes to help underprivileged kids. This is the first NFL football camp to be held in Palm Beach County. I’m trying to do something for these kids that no one did for me in high school. It will be great to surround them with NFL guys who are from the same area as them to show them what is possible if they put their mind to it.

To donate money or sponsor my football camp make out a check to the David Clowney Foundation and send it to 1 Jets Drive, Florham Park, NY 07932.

A New QB, A Friend Traded

Written By David Clowney | April 28, 2009

I didn’t get to watch most of the first day of the draft because I was in Texas doing a charity event, a celebrity car show with my teammate Drew Coleman. But I got a text from Mark Sanchez yesterday that said he was excited to be a Jet and that he can’t wait to work with me.

Abram Elam, one of my closest friends on the team, was right there next to me. Now he’s in Cleveland. It’s tough when someone you’re close to gets traded but he definitely should be starting in somebody’s system. In Cleveland he’ll get the opportunity to show how I know he can play.

When the Jets drafted Mark my phone blew up with calls and texts. I’m excited to see what he can do. It’s going to be a nice little show when he competes with Kellen for the starting job. I think they shouldn’t just make him the starter because he’s a first round pick. Let them compete and whatever happens, happens.

Either way it’s going to be fine. Me, I just have to keep working, keep grinding. My main job right now is to do anything I can to help the team win every game but also to get that starting job. Whatever QB is in there I just hope they can throw the ball far enough to where I’m going to be.

We had a great time at the charity car show raising money for the Boys & Girls Club. We all flew in and Drew paid for our hotel rooms, the same thing I do when I hold my football camp. I’m going to have Abe, Drew, Chad Pennington and some other guys fly in, I’ll have a limo pick them up at the airport and I’ll put them up in a hotel.

We’ve got the week off so I’m home in Florida to spend some time with my family. Workouts start Monday morning at 6:55 so I’ll get back Sunday night.

Man, Jets fans have been great. I seem to be the underdog that the fans like to root for. Whenever someone sees me on the street they tell me they hope I’m starting on the other side from Jericho and they’re glad I’m going to get the chance to show what I can do.

Now I just have to make it happen like I know I can on the field and everything will be good.

Learning the New Coaches

Written By David Clowney | April 16, 2009

We just had our first practice today and we have another this afternoon. It was fun, everybody was out there having a great time. There was a lot of competing going on, people were trash talking a little bit.

It’s a learning process right now with our new coaching staff. When Coach Mangini was here he was a real serious guy, he was kind of uptight about everything. He wanted everything to be precise and wanted us like that too. That kind of took the fun out of football.

Right now the coaches have told us to just go out there and have fun. Coach Ryan knows that we know what we’re doing so we can just go out there and have fun working hard.

A lot of people don’t know that I also love to cook. I’ll cook anything, steak, chicken, pasta, whatever, you come up with it and I’ll cook it. A lot of people like my pasta Alfredo, it’s off the hook. That’s one of my best dishes. I also like to make soul food and things like that.

I started cooking when I was little when my mom would be out at work and I would cook up something for me and my two little brothers. At first you try stuff and mess it up a bit, but you get better as you go along.

Now I cook for my little brother Jordan. I don’t watch those cooking shows too much but he really likes them. He watches Top Chef and Emeril and some other ones.

The draft is coming up and guys in the locker room are talking about it. I usually watch it, but I can’t this year because I’ll be in Texas at a charity event run by Drew Coleman. Right now I’m thinking it could be a big offensive draft for us, we could get a quarterback or receiver, but the draft is funny and you never know how it’s going to work out.

Welcome to my Blog
Written By David Clowney | March 24, 2009
When I came into the league with Green Bay, I came in like I was their guy, but I wasn’t. Like I had been in the league 10 years already.

Since I adopted my little brother Jordan and moved him from Florida to New Jersey I’ve gone to a whole new maturity level. I don’t go out as much, I stay at home studying plays for the game that week and I help him study, make sure there’s food, get him to bed, get his clothes together.

By me staying home my body gets the rest it needs, I have the energy I need in practice.

Look, I ran a 4.28 40 in college. At the combine I was clocked in 4.35 with a bad hamstring. When I’m healthy, I can go out there and blow the field up. Now I’m getting the 8 hours of sleep a night they say you need.

Jordan is 10. He’s a great kid, real smart, the type of kid who’s too smart for his age. He’s in 5th grade but he’s already got a highlight tape on youtube. Check it out at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rOmBDcSw_dc.

He also plays baseball and basketball. He gets along with everybody. That’s my little man.

I’m a firm believer that God makes everything happen for a reason. When Jordan first came up here I found out his games were on Sundays, same as mine. When I broke my collarbone the second week of the season, I was out 7-8 weeks. But by being hurt, I was able to see all of his games on Sundays.

Especially after our middle brother passed, we got real close and Jordan became attached to me.

I’m excited about this season and I want to let Jets fans know that they can expect everything they’ve been waiting on from me. I’m gonna make sure the Jets are going to play me more and I’m going to shine every play. Expect touchdowns, expect lots of deep balls.

Have high hopes, because whatever you’re expecting from me, I’m getting ready right now to make it happen.
